During November’s American Diabetes Month Humana South Florida Focused on Diabetes Among Hispanics

I had the distinct pleasure to work recently with Humana on their sponsorship of the 16th Annual Sunshine Awards that the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted at the Biltmore Hotel this past Wednesday.  Although October is gone we continued to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by spreading awareness that November is American Diabetes Month®.

It is astonishing that nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes and an additional 57 million Americans are at risk for developing it and it is the 5th leading cause of death among Hispanics and African-Americans.  Here is a resource I found online: State of diabetes Among Hispanics 2010 by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health

I was happy to join Humana on this project and assist their efforts to promote health and wellness within the South Florida and Hispanic business communities.  The Awards ceremony was attended by over 200 of South Florida’s entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners to celebrate each others contributions and achievements.  We all had the opportunity to hear Dr. Richard Carmona, former U.S. Surgeon General and our nation’s top doctor from 2002-2006 speak about how he overcome great adversity growing up in an impoverished Hispanic family as well as share the importance of preventative health, the seriousness of diabetes among Hispanics and how we can all lead a healthy lifestyle.  I had the privilege to personally meet him and spend some time behind the scenes during his media interviews.  Only two rooms down was the Marco Rubio press conference  where a most of the media was listening to the outcome of the elections.
